About Pop Songs

Pop music is logically considered as the type of music that is most accessible to the broadest array of listeners. As a genre, it can be described as highly eclectic because it practically borrows elements from other musical styles, which include dance, urban, country, and Latin. The core elements that define it are typical: short to medium in length, verse-chorus structure, catchy hooks, and melodic tunes.

Thus, it does not surprise that pop songs sells the most and draws the biggest volumes of concert audiences. Needless to say, top pop songs are also the most often played and heard on the radio. It can be easy to identify and describe the genre as the most successful in terms of placement in various music charts. In the music industry, it also comprises the most of mainstream music.

Pop songs as a term was first used in 1926 to refer to pieces of music with popular appeal. That is why many experts consider the 1920s as the birth era of this type of music. Some historians assert that pop as a kind of music started in the UK in the 1950s as a spinoff of rock and roll for the modern youth.

Around 1967, it was used to refer to the opposite of rock music. In comparison, this genre is characterized by being more ephemeral, commercial, and accessible. Whereas rock is aimed at pleasing rock fans in particular, pop can be aimed to appeal to just about everyone. Moreover, it is not to be considered as a do-it-yourself kind of music; rather, it is professionally packaged and produced.

Pop music can be treated as a form of art that particularly targets a mass audience. It is often described as a ‘melting pot’ borrowing and assimilating ideas and elements from a vast range of audio styles. Other popular music genres have recognizable influences to pop. In fact, most of those have been incorporated into the genre in different ways throughout the past decades.

Though the music type continues to function as a melting pot of various styles, a specific subgenre is considered as its purest form. Power pop or pure pop, as it is well known, consists of brief songs that usually last from 3 minutes to 5 minutes. Those tracks are accompanied by standard electric guitars, drums, and bass on top of vocals that belt out the famous hooks and catchy chorus. Many music critics assert that this subgenre does not concern art at all; moreover, it is just for pleasurable listening.

The rhythmic element in pop in general is undoubtedly noticeable. Aside from that, attention of listeners is drawn by simple traditional structure and mainstream style. The beat and melodies often tend to be simpler with characterized and limited harmonic accompaniments. What about the lyrics? Well, the songs belonging to this category usually focus on very simple themes (romantic relationships and love). It is interesting to know what the top pop songs today are. Here is an updated listing of all those singles that dominate the mainstream.
